: Grieg doesn't traditionally get the kind of recognition he should. There are two reasons for this. First, he didn't write very much music in large forms (symphonies, concerti, et al). He did write one piano concereto that is very popular. Most of his music consists of piano miniatures, chamber works, orchestral suites, etc. Lately music critics and musicologists are beginning to believe that this sort of snobbery is really a view which is held over from the romantic period when they worshipped Beethoven. There is nothing wrong with a composer who specializes in composing excellent miniatures. The other reason is because Grieg is considered a nationalistic composer (rightly so) and nationalistic composers are traditionally considered to be a small cut below composers of absolute music. Don't be ashamed of your admiration for Grieg - he belongs squarely in the ranks of the best of the romantic tradition.
Perhaps because he is dead.
