: :
: : : : Would like to chat about the symphonies and ballet music of Tchaikovsky. Is anybody out there? I would like to get a few more comments about the lesser heard 7th Symphony of Tchaikovsky. Is anyone out there?

: : : I am out here. :)
: : : We do need more participants here.. DO tell your friends to come! hehe :)

: : : As to the subject...
: : : 7th symphony? I'm intrigued, as I did not know of any such thing!
: : : DId he write it chronologically after the 6th? Is it completed?

: : The so-called Tchaikovsky "Seventh" Symphony was, in reality, a sketch for the Sixth. As it happens, it bears no relation to the Sixth we know, the "Pathetique." Tchaikovsky abandoned the work, even said he had destroyed it. (In a typically bleak mood, he claimed in a letter that he was "finished" as a composer.) But the sketches survived and were cannibalized by the composer himself for his Piano Concerto No. 3 (in one movement); by his pupil Taneyev, for the "Andante and Finale" for piano and orchestra (which constitutes the remainder of the "complete" third concerto); and by Tchaikovsky again for his cycle of 18 piano pieces, op. 72 (derived from the scherzo of the symphony). Soviet musicologist and teacher Semyon Bogatyrev completed a reconstruction in 1956, which was given its world premiere in 1957 by the Moscow Philharmonic. It was called "No.7," although chronologically it was composed before "No.6." The Philadelphia Orchestra made a fine recording in 1962, for Columbia; it has since resurfaced on compact disc, but I'm not sure if it's still in print. Neeme Jarvi made a recording, with the Third Piano Concerto, for Chandos, which I'm sure is a nice digital alternative. (I've heard the concerto, but not the symphony.)

: : This said -- and only a little off the topic -- I anxiously await the new reconstruction of the Elgar Third!

: Thank you for your thorough information Ross. :)

: Yes, I've heard of the Elgar reconstruction.. being handled by Payne I believe?
: Well.. I know that its done and recorded now. Anyone heard it yet?

A SPECIFIC QUESTION FROM MAUD:

I would like to know if any composition competition with the subject to continue the unfinished Tchaikovsky's 7th symphony does take place nextly?
Thanks for answering to me as soon as possible.
Maud.
