It has recently been discovered that beethoven died of lead poisoning. Scientsts were able to secure a lock of Beethoven's hair that was cut off by the attending phisician at the time of Beethoven's death. It was ped down in his family, and finally sold to a group of scientists who wanted to investigate Beethoven's death. By studying the chemical content of Beethoven's hair strands, they were able to determine that it is a 99.90/0 possibility that Beethoven died from lead poisonong, and not from syphillus as was believed. that was absolutely jo sign of mercury compounds in Beethoven's hair( a common treatment for syphillis at this time) that would have made the scientsts conclude that he had syphillus.
Vienna at that time was also a large manufacturer of lead and Beethoven may have picked it up there or when he visited a spa at Baden when he was 16 years old.
