Sir Colin Davis, the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, celebrates his 74th birthday today. To commemorate the occasion, I went to Online Clics (at http://www.onlineclics.com/Work.pasp?txtProductID=davis_birthday&txtCatalog=olc) and listened to (and watched) three of his concerts: "A Child of Our Time," "Le Grande Messe des Morts," and "Roméo et Juliette." Davis is almost universally acknowledged as the foremost interpreter of Berlioz. Is he really? Who are his competitors? I heard Davis once say that Tchaikowsky and Mahler overplayed. Do you agree? -- Steve
