Grüß Gott, Joel!
I have bought Brendel after comparing some of it to Howard, Jando, Kempff and Berman. I haven´t heard the complete set with the others, and there is always something you would hav liked in another way. I like Lamond better than Brendel in "Au lac de Wallenstein" because Brendel is too slow to my taste. Except for the beginning of "Au bord d´une source" I like Cortot better because he is quick and light as a feather, very fountainlike.
Brendel doesn´t want to impress through fast paces and has a very good understanding of the more serious sides of Liszt. You´ll hear this very much in "Chapelle de Guillaume Tell", "Vallée de Oberman" and "Ecloque".
He focusses on the music instead of showing off and hence he does a good work to remove the prejudices that some people tend to have towards Liszt.
I can only recommend this recording.
Viele Grüße
Franz
