Try Gliere's 3rd, subtitled: "Ilya Muromets" the Naxos CD is very good, and low priced. It's a huge, epic work - much more inspired than earlier symphonies.

If you like rare earlier 19th Century romantic symphonies, try the symphonies of Niels Gade. (He was Grieg's composition teacher.) Speaking of "Niels" try Carl Nielsen. Nos. 1 through 4 are wonderful. No. 5 is amazingly dramatic. No. 6 is problematical. (He was very ill when he wrote it.) It has a beautiful 1st movement though.

For American "neo-romantics" I recommend Randall Thompson's 2nd Symphony, Werner Josten: Symphony in F, and William Schumann's 3rd Symphony. The later two are in a word: bold. Very exciting music.

Also, for a large scale 20th century romantic, try the seven symphonies of Arnold Bax. The music is not unlike a big Hollywood film score.

And finally, one of my personal favorites is the 1st Symphony of Witold Lutoslawski. It's a magical piece. Much more of our times than Bax. The colorful scoring is reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Firebird". The music is beautifully constructed and memorable.

Greg
