Jack,
I'm a huge late-romantic opera buff, and Korngold was one of the very last greats--I've recently been listening to his "Das Wunder der Heliane", and it's a startlingly beautiful work, filled with music of such romantic sweep and seraphic calm that it takes your breath away. Don't overlook his other operas, including his most famous--"Die Tote Stadt", which features his most famous tune--"Marietta's Lied", which is one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed, and which rivalled Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" for popularity in the twenties. I'm soon going to investigate other operatic works of his, including "Violanta" (written as a r) and "Die Kathrin", which he wrote while also working on film scores.
Don't worry, I don't laugh--Korngold was a great composer.
Eric
: Movie composers ? Don't laugh. I can't wait to hear more of the "serious" music Erich Korngold wrote. He produced some gorgeous movie score music like "The Sea Wolf."
: Hey, not all composers want to starve.
: I heard his violin concerto and said "This guy was a genius."
: Any Korngold fans out there ? I'm just getting started on this person's scores.
: As a prodigy he ranks easily with Mozart or Britten.
: Folks when I do see a movie, which is not often, I'm always on the composer's side.
