You may find this useful.
My problems have almost been resolved. By chance I heard a live performance of "Scheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov. This piece pushes nearly every orchestral instument to its limit (not the harp I hope). So if I stay within the limits set by Scheherazade I should be OK.
Rimsky-Korsakov may not have written great music, but he is probably the all time master of orchestration. He wrote a book on the topic, which told me among other things that I was wrong to put oboe under clarinet and that it's dodgy using cello and b'soon in unison.
