This is to bring to your notice about Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's "Thiruvasakam In Symphony" - a unique attempt to present Thiruvasakam in a musical form, synthesising ideas from both the ICM and WCM traditions. Thiruvasakam is a Tamil spiritual masterpiece comprising of 51 divinely inspired verses sung by Saint Manickavasagar.
One of the main objectives of this project is to bring to the attention of the youth, such masterpieces from India's rich yet forgotten spiritual traditions. With this larger social objective in mind, TiS is produced as a non-commercial venture, solely with the financial support of music fans from all over the world. In this project selected verses from Thiruvasakam will be set to tune with a symphony orchestra providing the backing.
Maestro Ilaiyaraaja will be composing the music for this grand project. The project involves more than 200 musicians from India and Hungary, including the Budapest Symphony Orchestra conducted by Laszlo Kovacs. The English translation of the selected verses is done by Mr. Stephen Schwartz, the Oscar award winning lyricist of Pocahontas and Prince of Egypt. The final mastering will be done by Richard King, the 2004 Grammy winner for the Best Engineered Album.
The main objective of the US team is to raise $100,000 for this project in the US. Our near term target is to raise an additional $45,000 for recording expenses. Please donate generously to make TiS happen. The audio CD is expected to be released around September 2004.
