ALEXANDER FREY AWARDED DEUTSCHE SCHALLPLATTENPREIS

Conductor-pianist Alexander Frey, conductor Hugh Wolff, director Barrie Gavin, mezzo-soprano Anne Sophie von Otter, biographer Brendan
Carroll and others have been awarded the Deutsche Schallplatten Preis for the DVD "Erich Wolfgang Korngold: A Portrait and Concert". This is the most important recording prize of Germany and is regarded as the "German Grammy".

The first part of the film is a doentary of Korngold's life and career, and the second part is a concert featuring complete performances of Alexander Frey playing solo piano works of Korngold,
and features also the violin and cello concerti performend by Leonadis Kavakos and Quirin Viersin, respectively, with Hugh Wolff conducting the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Frey's
performances are superb and extraordinarily touching, reflecting his usual combination of complete command of technique, enormous sensitivity and large tonal pallette. Quirin Viersin gives a very dramatic reading of the cello concerto, beautifully paced and
intense. Leonidis Kavakos gives a compelling performance of the violin concerto in his own right, introspective and always mindful of the grand style.
