Beethoven's First Symphony does indeed rock (in a Haydn-esque kind of way), but I'm afraid the mighty Nine are so overexposed as to have nearly lost their kick! Since Corelli shuffled off this mortal coil more than a half century before Beethoven's birth, I think the wager is literally a case of beating a dead horse. Would you say Beethoven's music is sorry-ed because he doesn't write like Mahler? It would have been better to say Corelli wasn't fit to lick Handel's chamber pot, or perhaps to play Bach's organ! Still, I think if I hear the "Water Music" or the "Brandenburg" Concerti one more time, I shall never stop vomitting!
