What motivated Lee to invade Pennsylvania in 1863? From what I understand, the Army of Northern ia had a rough time the previous winter, and was really in no shape to go campaigning. Was Lee in search of supplies, or was he responding to political pressure. Of course, taking the war to northern soil would prove useful in getting international recongnition of the Confederacy, but did Lee feel his troops were materially up to the task? And what was Meade up to? Was he actively moving south, or awaiting Lee's next move?
