: Hamilton did not accuse Burr of . What Hamilton said, to almost anyone that would listen, was that Burr was an unscrupulous self-aggrandizing schemer who could not be trusted to act in the best interest of the public. Word got back to Burr and he wrote directly to Hamilton (rightfully so), who refused to detract any statements, or issue a carte blanche apology, which eventually Burr demanded. They met at Weehawken to placate their respective honor(s).
For the best written account of dueling as a code of honor, I would recommend an article written by Joanna B. Freeman in William and Mary Quarterly April 1996. Ms. Freeman has extensively researched the political duel and "all its complexity." Ms. Freeman has spent most of her life researching Hamilton and makes for a very credible, knowlegable author. At the time of her writing she was a doctoral candidate at the U of VA.
