Fiction = made up.
That is why I caution people against reading historical fiction because it's too easy to get confused with the actual facts. I do the same when discussing Gertrude Atherton's "the Conqueror," which as a biography of Hamilton is too fictional and is dramatized very liberally, and thus is of little historical value.

The basis for the duel is exhaustively doented. Most Hamilton biographies excerpt the letters that went back and forth, starting with the one from Burr. To read all of them, see "A Collection of the Facts and Doents Relative to the Death of Major General Alexander Hamilton" by William Coleman, which was reprinted in 1972.

Hamilton did not accuse Burr of . What Hamilton said, to almost anyone that would listen, was that Burr was an unscrupulous self-aggrandizing schemer who could not be trusted to act in the best interest of the public. Word got back to Burr and he wrote directly to Hamilton (rightfully so), who refused to detract any statements, or issue a carte blanche apology, which eventually Burr demanded. They met at Weehawken to placate their respective honor(s).
