Hamilton disliked Burr, for good reasons. Breifly, Burr ousted Hamilton’s father-in-law from the Senate; Burr intercepted Hamilton’s private letter to Federalist leaders regarding John Adams and published it (ouch!); Burr switched parties and threatened to displace Hamilton as the leader of the Federalists (Hamilton's influence was seriously waning anyway).
But Hamilton’s dislike of Burr went beyond this. Hamilton branded him an embryonic Caesar, and repeatedly stated that Burr was a treacherous opportunist who would aggrandize himself at the cost of the country (strong words). Guess what? He was right. Burr proved Hamilton 100% correct after Hamilton was killed, by going west and attempting to form a breakaway country (he was tried for treason for this). Of course, Hamilton wasn't alive to witness the vindication of his essment of Burr.

I couldn't get through much of Vidal's book. I despise historical novels (novels = fiction). Beyond the obvious oxymoron, they confuse the reader by augmenting history with all types of made-up crap. Throw it away if your thesis is at all concerned with facts. Be warned that Gertrude Atherton's "The Conqueror" takes similar liberties with Hamilton's story, which again destroys the historical utility of her book.
