I agree, it's sad that wilderness does not exist in the same state today as it did in Thoreau's time, but the true essence of Thoreau's words were that you don't need a quite, self-built cottage in the woods of New England in order to mantain a self fulfilling existence. You need only to work in a non-stop state of self-betterment. If it takes a Walden pond to do that, then so be it.
