: how can Racine's "Phaedra" be called a drama of human suffering that grips the mind and extorts a close interest despite any repugnance to its theme.
It can't. Phaedra is a drag.
However, Aristotle probably would've liked it, which explains why some people still believe it's any good.
Give it another fifty years, and it'll be totally forgotten.
