What you call your conscience is in reality your identity. Think if we could have all of these seperate parts to ourselves surely we would be able to remove them, but if we were to remove them we must be less than ourselves. Consider, if I removed my arm than I would no longer be the self I was before I removed the arm and hence I would have to alter my identity. When we stay true to our self we go through life in the same way, we decide or not decide to act on those propositions that occur to us. Those propositions are determined by our identity. All of our problems are problems of identity. Consider, if I am a married man and my wife leaves me, than I must go through a change of identity and this is what causes me problems. This is true even if I am thinking of leaving her at the same time because my self still has the proposittion that I am a married man. Free will is only my ability to act or not act on those propositions that occur to me and these propositions are determined by my perception of my experience.
: Hi. For me there is no conflict. I perceive freewill as governed by conscience. When we listen to our conscience and abide by its will we feel comfortable in whatever situation we may find ourselves. The very fact that we are comfortable allows us the illusion of freewill. But the conscience could also be perceived as the guide to that place that we know in our hearts we should be even when we would prefer to be elsewhere. I believe the answer lies in the assertion that the conscience is the individual. Am I me because of the values, thoughts and feelings that are the collective of m conscience?
