Here in Sweden there is quite a bit written about LotR and about Tolkien. The main problem is that it isn't old enough to be a classic (was written in the fifties) and is to old to be a modern work. This puts it in a awkward position...
But The Hobbit, in my opinion, isn't much more than a childrens book and would probably not be popular at all if it hadn't been for LotR.
