: Can anyone think of other possibilities from which morality has developed? Or can anyone think about the the models I have given. I'm interested in your ideas.
Morality, in its purest form, is most likely drawn from necessity. If the first humans had just murdered one another, there would be no human race or morality to speak of. Morality may simply be a term that was created to describe something that is indescribable; it's like some basic, in-born (or at the very least, well taught) human law that has allowed us to make it this far with only a few bumps in our path.
I do, however, not want to write off the Divine Law theory. In today's society, it is more than obvious that the ideas of a Divine Law affect our ethics and morality. It may or may not be the source of morality itself, but it has a great affect on the stability and consistency of existing morals.
Here's another little side question: what is the source of "honor," which often adds to our basic human morals?
