If we look at this statement in the context of the region and time-frame from which F.N. spoke, then I fervently believe that he is referring to the absolute break-down of "faith" among men and nations around him.
He was not referring to the entity "God" as being dead, merely, that people were in hoards to "worship" an idealism, totally designed by themselves to make themselves look deserving and "above" others!
This alone underscores the strong disdain F.N. felt for the "Christians." Those who claimed to do God's work, but who were working only for themselves!
